The digital transformation in the steel industry has achieved remarkable results. In recent years, the steel industry has made a series of accomplishments in the process of digital and intelligent construction. Particularly, the leading large steel enterprises have taken the lead and, relying on emerging technologies such as 5G, big data, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and mobile internet, have explored a digital transformation path that suits the needs of their own industrial chain and value chain.
However, we must recognize that the imbalance and inadequacy of digital development in China's steel industry remain a significant issue at present. The digitalization level of most small and medium-sized steel enterprises is low. Moreover, due to problems such as the "digital divide" within the industry, the construction of the digital ecosystem is progressing slowly. In terms of industry coverage, functional completeness, and the richness of model components, etc., there is a relative lag. All these are challenges that China's steel industry will face in accelerating its digital transformation in the coming period. We need to demonstrate our strength and courage to continuously overcome difficulties and achieve results. We should note that accelerating digital transformation and quickly building a digital ecosystem is the only way to realize the "steel digital economy". Therefore, the entire industry must unite and raise the overall digitalization level. We should do our best to bridge the "digital divide" among different enterprises, remove data bottlenecks within enterprises, and connect disconnected points. We must truly make high-quality data elements come alive, move, and be utilized.
First, standards should come first, facilitating an overall leap in digitalization levels. The digital transformation of the steel industry cannot be achieved solely by the leading steel enterprises. The effective establishment and sustainable development of the digital ecosystem require the participation and involvement of every enterprise, including small and medium-sized steel enterprises. This necessitates accelerating the construction of an intelligent manufacturing standard system at the industry level, leveraging the guiding role of standards, and reducing the threshold for the application of digital technologies through standardization, thereby lowering the difficulty of the digital transformation of the entire industry and helping it reach a new level of digitalization. In the past three years, the steel industry has, in line with the national development strategy and the urgent needs of the steel industry, taken solving practical problems as the starting point and supporting the application of intelligent manufacturing technologies in the steel industry as the focus, actively promoting the construction of an intelligent manufacturing standard system in the steel industry. As of December 2022, the steel industry has released 42 China Iron and Steel Association group standards, covering all intelligent manufacturing application scenarios, and the gradually improved industry intelligent manufacturing standard system has played a regulatory and guiding role, and has played a significant role in promoting the integration and innovative application of new-generation information technologies and the steel industry. In the future, China's steel industry should transform the advanced experiences created in the field of intelligent manufacturing into standards, and strengthen research and application implementation of cutting-edge standards, contributing to the realization of high-level digital transformation of the entire industry.
Second, strengthen digital capability building to facilitate value creation. Most steel enterprises encounter problems such as insufficient data processing capabilities during their digital transformation. Nowadays, the rapid iterative development of digital technologies has made it possible for steel enterprises to quickly analyze the production process patterns hidden in massive data. In this regard, steel enterprises should focus on data asset management and value creation. Starting from levels such as value points, value chains, value networks, and value ecosystems, they should progress from point to line, from line to surface, and from surface to body, making big data truly "come alive" and providing "blood" for enterprise operations, gradually promoting the realization of digital transformation value. For example, steel enterprises that have basically established a digital foundation should actively build a "data foundation", including data full life cycle management, data governance, big data storage, big data analysis engine, and big data flow driving, and thereby form a virtuous data ecosystem that can serve the entire steel industry, helping the entire value chain optimize resource allocation, empower product research and manufacturing, provide personalized customization services, formulate enterprise production and operation strategies, and promote cost reduction and efficiency improvement throughout the entire chain.
Thirdly, accelerate deeper digital transformation and solve the difficulties of upgrading. Due to the long production chain and complex production processes of the steel industry, in the early stage, steel enterprises optimized and updated their machinery equipment and production processes by applying technologies such as Internet of Things, cloud computing, and automated control. However, we must recognize that merely optimizing and updating is not enough; efforts must also be made to address the difficulties of upgrading such as complex processes, numerous procedures, and uncontrollable risks, such as the "black box" and "uncertainty" in the steel production process. By accelerating digital transformation to a deeper level, we can achieve the digitalization of all links in the production process to the greatest extent, and further connect the entire data chain and extract data value, laying a solid foundation for truly empowering the development of the steel industry with digitalization.
In the new era, with new missions and a new journey ahead, as the digital transformation of China's steel industry progresses at an accelerated pace, we can confidently believe that in the near future, after undergoing comprehensive, full-chain and full-process digital transformation, China's steel industry will experience a new leap in development, making its contribution to building a digital China.
