Haynes 230-W Product Description

Overview

Haynes 230-W is a nickel-chromium-tungsten-molybdenum filler metal for welding high-temperature alloys. This datasheet presents the material within the American (ASTM / ASME / AWS / UNS) standard system.

The companion filler metal to Haynes 230 alloy, Haynes 230-W is used for the gas-tungsten-arc and gas-metal-arc welding of 230 alloy and may also be used to weld alloy 617 and thick-section cobalt alloys such as Haynes 188. The deposited weld metal combines excellent high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance with superior long-term thermal stability and good fabricability. Tungsten is the primary solid-solution strengthener — the reason 230 outperforms many alloys above 871 °C — while a small lanthanum addition improves oxide-scale adhesion during thermal cycling and the carbon forms stable M₆C and M₂₃C₆ carbides that resist grain coarsening. It is supplied as filler wire (AWS A5.14 ERNiCrWMo-1).

Typical applications include filler metal for welding gas-turbine combustion-zone components — combustor cans, transition ducts and flame holders — and other high-temperature 230, 617 and cobalt-alloy assemblies in aerospace and power generation.

3. Mechanical Properties

All-weld-metal condition, typical values for UNS N06231.

Condition Property Value
All-weld-metal Tensile strength (UTS) ≥760 MPa (110 ksi)
All-weld-metal 0.2% yield strength ≥310 MPa (45 ksi)
All-weld-metal Elongation at break ≥40 %
At elevated temperature High-temperature strength Retained; tungsten-strengthened
— Elastic modulus 211 GPa

Confirm against the mill / weld test report. As a filler metal, the value lies in the high-temperature strength and stability of the deposited weld metal.

4. Corrosion / Oxidation Resistance

Environment Performance Notes
High-temperature oxidation (to ~1149 °C) Excellent Lanthanum-stabilised chromia scale
Nitriding environments Excellent Matches 230 base alloy
Long-term thermal stability Excellent Carbide-stabilised structure
Carburisation Very Good High chromium
Weld-joint high-temperature service Excellent Strength + oxidation resistance

The deposited weld metal reproduces the high-temperature oxidation resistance, nitriding resistance and long-term thermal stability of 230 base alloy, with the tungsten providing high-temperature strength and the lanthanum improving oxide-scale adhesion during thermal cycling.

5. Heat Treatment

A single-phase solid-solution alloy; not hardenable by precipitation. Welded assemblies are used as-welded or solution annealed.

Solution Anneal Where base-metal solution annealing is required, solution anneal at approximately 1175–1245 °C (2150–2275 °F) and rapidly cool. The filler metal itself is not strengthened by heat treatment; weld-metal properties derive from its solid-solution and carbide structure.

6. Weldability and Joining

This alloy is itself a filler metal — its primary purpose. Used for gas-tungsten-arc and gas-metal-arc welding of 230 alloy, alloy 617 and thick-section cobalt alloys such as Haynes 188. Clean surfaces are essential; base metal is preferably welded in the solution-annealed condition.

Welding Process Applicability Filler / Consumable
GTAW / TIG Excellent 230-W filler (ERNiCrWMo-1)
GMAW / MIG Excellent 230-W filler (ERNiCrWMo-1)
As filler metal Primary use 230, 617 and cobalt-alloy joints

The alloy is itself the filler metal (AWS A5.14 ERNiCrWMo-1, ASME SFA-5.14); weld with clean surfaces and appropriate procedures.
